SUNDAY MATINEE AND NIGHTFALL

RADIO 121

DRAMAS CONTINUE ON CBC RADIO

September 16, 1982.

Chain Reaction, adapted from the novel by Gordon Pape and Tony Aspler, stars Paul Soles as an investigative reporter who becomes embroiled in intrigue and murder in a future Quebec. On October 3, this Canadian thriller leads off the third season of Sunday Matinee on CBC Radio at 4.05 p.m. Eastern and Mountain, 5.05 Atlantic, 5.35 Newfoundland, 3.05 Central and 1.05 Pacific.

While CBC Stereo inaugurates two new hour-long series, Saturday Stereo Theatre and Sunday Stereo Theatre, two popular drama series continue on CBC Radio. Sunday Matinee offers adventure, comedy, romance, mystery and history plays and Nightfall, the popular Friday night horror show, returns for its third season of spine-tingling drama in the last half hour of As It Happens, October 1.

Sunday Matinee's new executive producer, Fred Diehl, has lined up some intriguing listening entertainment this fall. Chain Reaction is followed by the first hour-long play by Max Ferguson, The Initiation, a bittersweet tale of revenge (October 10); Geometry, a triangle for living by the prolific Rachel Wyatt, who won first prize in the drama adventure category in the fourth CBC Literary Competition (October 17); the first radio play by Governor General's Award winner Jack Hodgins, Pernouski's Dream (October 24); and a double bill, Catch My Death, an engaging comedy by the multitalented Mavor Moore, and The Plot by Newfoundlander Lorne Warr.

Other highlights are Odd's End, Seal Book Award winner, by Tim Wynne-Jones, a suspense thriller with guest star Douglas Rain (November 14); The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber, adapted from Ernest Hemingway's short story and produced by Fletcher Markie, which marks the return of Lloyd Bochner to radio (November 21); and The White Christmas of Archie Nicotine from a short story by W.O. Mitchell (December 26)

Nightfall also has a new executive producer, Don Kowalchuk of Vancouver, best-known for producing the zany Dr. Bundolo comedy series. Writers include such Canadians as Arthur Samuels of Montreal, Larry LeClair of Prince Edward Island, Al Purdy, Phil Savath of Vancouver, and such non-Canadians as Honoré de Balzac and Nathaniel Hawthorne. Producers are William Lane, Bill Howell and Stephen Katz in Toronto, John Juliani and Kowalchuk in Vancouver, and Laurie Seligman in Edmonton.

Set in the crazy, fast-paced world of standup comedy, the opener, October 1 is appropriately titled, This One Will Kill You by Arthur Samuels. It stars Alan Royal and Sean McCann with Barbara Hamilton, Les Carlson and John Evans. Saul Rubinek, Michael Ball, Joseph Golland and Linda Sorenson are among the roster of actors in the fall lineup.

Drama for the mind's eye, this fall, on CBC Radio.
