NPR PLAYHOUSE is a daily strip of drama programming. Components change each season. The fall of 1981 has the following line-up:

 

MON:

THE ADVENTURE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES/ BBC Production.

 

A radio adaptation of Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, dramatized for radio by Michael Hardwick. Holmes, played by Carlton Hobbs, and Doctor Watson, portrayed by Norman Shelley, together solve the mysteries in serialized half-hour presentations of Doyle's suspense-filled mysteries surrounding the legendary sleuth of Baker Street.

 

TUES:

LORD OF THE RINGS/ BBC Production.

 

J.R.R. Tolkien's million-selling trilogy comes to life in these 26 half-hour episodes which explore Tolkien's mythical Middle Earth and its diverse inhabitants. Special music written expressly for this series by Stephen Oliver creates the atmosphere needed for the battle scenes.

 

WED:

KEN NORDINE'S WORD JAZZ/ Ken Nordine Production.

 

A weekly half-hour adventure into the unique power of audio to free the imagination. Nordine's Word Jazz is a surrealistic journey into improvisation with words and sounds, providing fascinating entertainment.

 

THUR:

LORD OF THE RINGS

 

 

FRI:

NIGHTFALL/ CBC Production.

 

A half-hour series of bone-chilling thrillers hosted by the gravelly-voiced Luther Kranst who introduces each tale of the weird, the uncanny and the good old-fashioned horrible.

 

SUN:

DRAMA SPECIALS/ NPR Productions.

 

Hour long radio plays featuring many of the nation's outstanding actors. In October: "Rite of Passage," starring the well-known Richard Crenna, Meredith Baxter Birney, and others; David Mamet's "The Water Engine"; "The World of F. Scott Fitzgerald," a repeat of NPR's critically acclaimed dramatization of the work of F. Scott Fitzgerald; and more as NPR PLAYHOUSE presents a stunning potpourri of drama that finds a niche with every member of the family!
