Nightfall News

Here you will find current news about Nightfall and the people involved in making it. If and when episodes are released on CD, or sold in packages for broadcast, we'll tell you about it here. The same goes for important events in the lives of Nightfall cast, crew and writers.

December 18th: Our research assistant in Toronto, Brenda Shaw, informed me today of the passing of writer/actor Mavor Moore ("The Book of Hell" [#34]/"They Bite" [#29]).  He was 87.  Writer, actor, producer, songwriter, and long-serving members of the Canada Council, Moore was a Canadian popular culture icon.

July 26th: Bill Gray is developing a film version of his Nightfall episode, "Gerald" (#45) and has applied for a second-stage development grant from Telefilm Canada. We at the Nightfall-25 Project are very excited about this and wish Bill the best of luck with it!

July: This isn't specifically Nightfall-related, but the CBC is currently airing a summer series of spine-tingling thrillers called Deep Night, Fridays at 10:00pm EST. You can listen to it via the CBC Radio stream (click here then select Toronto). Among the stories being presented is "Birth", by Canadian SF author Robert J. Sawyer and produced by our friend Joe Mahoney and featuring, in the cast, Nightfall alumni Phil Akin ("Reverse Image" [#67], "Daddy's Girl" [#78]) which is a pilot for a possible hard-SF series called Emanations. Please give the CBC good feedback on it!

November 14th: I received an e-mail last night from former Calgary producer Bill Gray informing me that writer Phil Savath ("No Quarter" [#90] and The Wedding" [#96]) passed away on November 3rd. I hadn't yet had the chance to interview Phil -- we were waiting for him to receive recordings of his two stories from the CBC -- but he was very interested in and supportive of the Nightfall-25 Project and I will miss his enthusiasm. There is more in my November 14th LiveJournal entry.

June 2nd: I learned this evening that Bill Howell, creator and executive producer of Nightfall has been "let go" by the CBC after 27 years of dedicated service to the Corporation. Circumstances are unclear, but it seems related to a disagreement over changes in The Mystery Project's timeslot. The Nightfall 25 Project Staff and its friends wish Mr. Howell well and hope that he will not be long absent from producing great radio drama.
